You Can Now Live Inside a Georgia O’Keeffe Painting, Thanks to Steven Allen Designs
Based in Houston, TX, Steven Allen Designs is a firm that provides construction and renovation services in the American Southwest. They designed a series of five art nouveau bungalows in the Houston area. This bungalow, the third in the series, was inspired by the iconic artist Georgia O’Keeffe.
O’Keeffe is considered a pioneer of American modernism and the foremost painter of the American Southwest. This Texas bungalow captures both O’Keeffe’s abstract modern tendencies and her transcendent landscape color palettes. A low, unassuming facade is made of wood and corrugated metal, arranged in contemporary shapes.
Inside, exposed joist ceilings and polished concrete floors are industrial chic. Mod neon accents cast a sunset glow over the high, unvarnished walls. The master suite is all vivid painterly blues and cooling subway tile in the shower.
The whole residence is comprised of long, languid rectangles, mirroring the artist’s house paintings as well the adobe Ghost Ranch home where she spent the last 40 years of her life.
No O’Keeffe interior is complete without nature. Greenery is scattered throughout the bungalow, as are area rugs with distinct Southwestern patterns. Sheet glass opens onto a sprawling patio ideal for enjoying the desert dusk. Just like Georgia O’Keeffe’s art, this home is unabashedly modern yet unpretentious and organic.
